22-09-26 National Student Short Film Competition: “Anniversaries and Figures of the Greek War of Independence”

The General Secretariat for Religious Affairs of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, in cooperation with the Special Synodal Committee on Cultural Identity of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, is organizing the national student short film competition, “Anniversaries and Figures of the Greek War of Independence.”
This year’s competition marks the 200th anniversary of historic events, including the heroic death of Georgios Karaiskakis, the election of Ioannis Kapodistrias as the first Governor of Greece, and the historic victory of the monks of the Mega Spilaio Monastery over Ibrahim Pasha.
Second and third-grade Junior High School students throughout Greece are invited to participate in the competition until February 25, 2027, either individually or in groups of up to three, under the supervision of a teacher.
Winners will participate in an educational program, which includes an educational trip to Kalavryta and an official awards ceremony.
For the current school year, students are invited to create a short film inspired by one of the following prominent figures associated with our nation’s heroic struggles:
- Georgios Karaiskakis
- Ioannis Kapodistrias
- The heroic monks of Mega Spilaio
- An anonymous woman of the Greek War of Independence (e.g., the women of Mani, Chios, or Naousa)
Through their creations, students will have the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings on the topic, engage in academic and historical research by exploring and studying historical sources, and reflect on its significance and relevance to modern life, drawing inspiration from the lives and work of these historical figures.
